Flights of Fancy Spring Pillows

butterfly and dragonfly handmade pillows

With all the rain Mother Nature has sent our way this spring, I’m ready to incorporate some bright colors into my house any way I can.   These bright pillows are fairly quick to complete, and easy for someone like me, whose machine sewing is limited to square projects, to complete.

Simply cut squares of coordinating fabrics, and hem the edges.  Layer and sew together to right side of solid fabric pillow fronts.  Sew on the canvas rectangle to the side of the layered squares.

To create dragonflies and butterfly, draw or trace shape onto canvas fabric.  Paint using fabric paints and cut out.  Apply to pillow fronts using an iron-on fusible web or a fabric glue such as Beacon’s Fabri-Tac.

To finish, sew right sides of pillow front and back together leaving one edge open for turning.  Insert a pillow form (I used this 14×14″ pillow form by Fairfield) and stitch the opening closed.  Sew on coordinating buttons to each canvas rectangle using embroidery floss.

These pillows are easy to customize for a gift using the recipient’s favorite colors, or great for celebrating spring in your own home.  Keep hopping using the button in the sidebar ——->  to see some other great gift projects from CHA designers.

Until next time…

  3. Boy, do we ever need some color after this dreary winter. Those pillows are a great way to do it! I love that you picked insects that are a sure sign that spring is here.
