Easy + Educational + Fun = Printable Earth Day Bingo

You know I love a good themed printable bingo game here at CSD HQ, and and this version celebrating Earth Day on April 22nd is one of my favorites. I filled this one with lots of small changes we can make to help protect our planet’s resources.

These cute Earth Day bingo cards are the perfect activity to go along with a learning unit on conservation, environmental issues or climate change. Younger children at home can learn fun ideas for taking care of planet Earth while they’re playing, then try an idea or two. Themed bingo is a great way to switch up regular activities at senior centers as well.

3 Earth Day Bingo cards, each with an aqua border, overlapping a page of calling cards. Both have colorful conservation images. Pages are lying on a split green/blue background with tree graphics in the bottom right corner.

Each of the 30 icons in this Earth Day Bingo represents a way to help conserve and protect our environment. Talking briefly about each one as it’s called is a great reinforcement of a lesson or reminder of something extra we can add to our current routines.

There are 6 unique cards in the free download, perfect for family afternoons, or small groups needing a fun Earth Day activity.

Larger sets of up to 50 different cards are available in my online store for class parties and other bigger groups.

Setting Up for Printable Bingo

Before the big day, you’ll need to prepare your Earth Day bingo set. It won’t take long, but it’s easier to just take out the game when you’re ready to play.

Download and print the free printable bingo cards and calling card sheet. The cards are designed 2 per US letter size page to save paper and printing costs. If you’re using A4 paper, adjust your printer settings to “fit to page” to make sure your bingo boards print properly.

Mid-weight white cardstock is my favorite for bingo printables. It gives the best results, and it’s more durable than standard printer paper. Printer paper will also work, but expect them to last only one day of use. For this set, recycled paper would be a great nod to the Earth Day theme.

You can download the free printable file near the bottom of this post.

Cut apart the bingo game boards and calling cards. I use a paper cutter for straight edges and quickness, but scissors will work too.

You’ll need something small and inexpensive to use as bingo markers. Since this is an Earth Day activity, consider using natural or recycled items. You can cut up empty cereal boxes into squares, or try popcorn kernels or small pebbles (for children over 3). Candy is always a good option as well.

*tip: laminating the bingo sheets using either a laminating machine or self-laminating envelopes will allow reusing the cards through the whole month of April, even year after year.

You can use dry erase markers on laminated bingo sheets, though I still find the bingo cards don’t last as nicely over time with all the erasing.

Earth Day Bingo: How to Play

Most people have played a traditional game of bingo before.  Themed bingo is similar, but it uses pictures instead of numbers and letters. Reviewing the rules is always a good idea, to avoid confusion and make sure everyone understands.

To play Bingo:

  1. Pass out Earth Day bingo boards to each player or team. Place the calling cards in a bowl and mix them well.
  2. Give each player at least 25 bingo markers (more if using candy, since some will “mysteriously vanish” during the game.)
  3. Make sure each player places a marker on the center free space.
  4. As the bingo caller pulls a calling card from the bowl, players add a marker to the matching picture space.
  5. The first person to match 5 in a row (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally) shouts “BINGO!” and wins the game

All players then clear the game pieces from their boards to play again.

Different ways to
win Bingo

Changing up the winning move from a single straight line is a great way to make this fun Earth Day game shorter or longer. Try these options:

  • Four Corners– cover all 4 of the board corners
  • X-OUT – match both diagonals through the center square
  • Cris-Cross – match vertical and horizontal through the center square
  • Make a Letter – try marking a T, L, O, or I to win

Earth Day Bingo Prizes

It’s always fun to win prizes, and prizes for Earth Day bingo have the added benefit of serving as a cue to keep making environmentally conscious choices. Try these options:

3 pages of printed Earth Day bingo cards, each with 2 cards per page. Each card has an aqua border. The pages are overlapped with a printed calling card page on a brown paper background accented with 3 earth paper cutouts.
