New Year’s Eve for us is a giant game night with families we’ve known since high school…cough…ahem…years ago. It’s a group that has spanned a wide age group over the years, so having a game that can be played separately or together makes the perfect activity.

New Year’s Eve bingo is one of those games that passes the “kids of all ages” test.

Kids can play on their own while the adults play cards. Adults can play while the kids are having a giant dance party. Or everyone can hang out together.

It’s even a fun game for younger children to have some New Year’s fun even if they can’t stay up until midnight.

It’s easy to set up and play. Keep reading as I share my favorite tips.

Setting Up for New Year’s Eve Bingo

Before the big night, you’ll need to prepare your free New Year’s Bingo Game. It won’t take long, but it’s easier to just take out the game instead of cutting things apart when you’d rather be having fun.

Download and print the game cards and calling sheet. The printable bingo cards are designed 2 per US letter size page so you save on printing.

Mid-weight white cardstock is my favorite for bingo printables, since it’s more durable than standard printer paper. Printer paper will also work, but expect them to last only one day of use.

You can download the free printable file near the bottom of this post.

Cut apart the bingo game boards and calling cards. A crafting paper trimmer is the easiest for straight edges and speed, but scissors will work too.

You’ll need small, inexpensive items to use as bingo markers (Gold and silver foil-wrapped kisses are great with this set.)

*tip: laminating the bingo sheets using either a laminating machine or self-laminating envelopes will allow reusing the cards will allow reusing the cards next year too.

You can use dry erase markers on laminated bingo sheets, though I find the bingo cards get a little grubby with all the repeated erasing.

How to Play Bingo

Most people have played traditional bingo before.  But reviewing the rules is always a good idea, to avoid confusion and make sure everyone is on the same page.

To play New Year’s Bingo:

  1. Pass out bingo boards to each player or team. Place the calling cards in a bowl and mix them well.
  2. Give each player at least 25 bingo markers (more if using candy, since some will “mysteriously vanish” during the game.)
  3. Make sure each player places a marker on the center free space.
  4. The bingo caller pulls a calling card from the hat, describes the image, and players add a marker to the matching picture space.
  5. The first person to match 5 in a row (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally) shouts “BINGO!” and wins the game.

All players then clear the game pieces from their bingo cards to play again.

Alternative Bingo Winning Plays

Changing up the winning move from a single straight line is a great way to make this fun New Years’ game shorter or longer. Try these options:

  • Four Corners– cover all 4 of the board corners
  • X-OUT – match both diagonals through the center square
  • Cris-Cross – match vertical and horizontal through the center square
  • Make a Letter – try marking a T, L, O, or I to win

Adding Extra Festivity

New Year’s Eve is the perfect opportunity to add some bonus festive personality to your game.

Have your bingo caller wear a sparkly tiara and year glasses. Pull the calling cards out of a party hat. Make your winner announce their BINGO by blowing a party horn.

More is always better when it comes to a New Year’s Eve party!

New Year’s Party Prizes

Party games are always more fun with prizes! Since this is a festive occasion, have some festive prizes to match. You can hand out specific prizes for each round, or let your winner choose from the pile.

FAQs about Bingo

Ages 3+ should be able to understand the game, though some young children may still need help to play.

Any small item can be a bingo marker. Candy is probably the most popular option, just be sure to choose something that won’t roll away.

For non-candy markers, try large confetti circles, novelty erasers, craft pom-poms, or buttons. Be sure to consider safety and closely supervise children under 3.

Like most themed bingo cards, this set uses fewer images than necessary for blackout bingo. Even though all 56 cards are unique, it is likely that multiple people would call blackout bingo at the same time.
